When Karen turned fifty, she didn’t throw a birthday, she founded a club, and it took over Elwood Bathers in two epic parts last summer. The brief read like a fantasy: fifty shades of azure, the unmistakable KG monogram stamped across every mirror, and a venue where the French Riviera spilled onto Melbourne’s most golden shoreline. We said yes before the sentence finished.

Arrival was everything. Guests were greeted like members, not partygoers, with a custom postcard station where they wrote their own postcards from paradise, and custom toiles created just for KLUB KG, little pieces of the club to take home and keep. Calligraphy place cards assigned every seat like fate, blue tiled backdrops dripped with coral and blush custom florals, and custom decals, bespoke pillows and imported food and drinks carried the KG story through every room. From the first step inside it was clear: this wasn’t a birthday you attended. It was a membership you were granted.

Then came the residents. Giant, custom made flamingos wading through the installations like they owned the waterline, fabulous and unapologetic and, yes, available for hire, because icons of that calibre don’t do one night only. Around them, peach and apricot arrangements spilled across the bar, magenta orchids lit the tables of the secret Klub Iconique restaurant, and the deck turned golden hour into a mood: burgundy velvet, hot pink cushions and sunset colours burning against the bay.

And because a club this iconic keeps proof of membership, the custom photo moment demanded to be used. An azure floral backdrop framed every guest like the face of the club: group shots, solo moments, flamingo cameos, the lot. Nobody walked past it. The feed has never been bluer, and Karen’s fifty has never been better documented.

But every great club hides its best room. Behind an unmarked door waited the secret after party: the blue room, draped floor to ceiling in deep azure velvet, silver tables gleaming under low light, mirrorball florals in cobalt and cream and an azure after dark bar menu keeping the night well past sensible. Part one was the Riviera at golden hour. The blue room was what the Riviera does after midnight. The guests who found it never really wanted to leave.
